Hope Takes Action
This February the weight of current events weighs heavily on many. We are faced with increased blatant systemic discrimination and hatred. Immigrants in my country are under attack. Transgender people are under attack. Science is under attack. DEI is under attack while people are simultaneously diminishing the accomplishments of many black Americans. Women in several states have lost access to lifesaving healthcare. People in same sex couples are having their marriages threatened. Idaho, a state I visited last summer, wants to remove recognition of marriage of same sex couples, of which I am one. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, as somebody who treats transgender individuals and as a human I am deeply saddened and afraid of what is happening.
The pain and fear I hear everyday from friends and clients is palpable. People are hurting and the anxiety is overwhelming. As athletes we are not immune to the worry and stress. As we decide which races to do, which states to travel we have to decide how do we align our values, our joy and our safety.
As your bank accounts start to empty due to price hikes, you need to look no further than the tariffs placed on our allies, and the removal of immigrants. With all of the bad news, and the feelings of despair, what can we do? Keep reading for some tips to get through challenging times.
Prioritize self care: Take breaks from social media and the news. The constant barrage of news and social media can be emotionally draining. It's okay – and crucial – to step back. Set boundaries on your media consumption. Not every moment needs to be filled with the latest headline. Instead, carve out time for activities that nourish your soul: exercise, healthy eating, spending time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, or simply enjoying a quiet moment of reflection.
Focus on your circle of influence: Feeling powerless is common, but we all have areas where we can make a difference. You can control your social media intake, the company you keep, and your level of engagement with causes you care about. Don't underestimate the power of these choices. They shape your well-being and the world around you.
Get involved: Volunteering is a powerful antidote to despair. It connects you to your community and allows you to make a tangible difference. Your local food bank, park foundation, animal shelter, or countless other organizations are likely in need of support. Find a cause that resonates with you and dedicate some time to it. Giving back not only helps others, but also strengthens your own sense of purpose and hope.
Live your values: Stay true to who you are. Stay true to what you believe. Now, more than ever, it's essential to stay true to your core beliefs. Don't let fear or negativity sway you from what you know is right. Let your values guide your actions and decisions, both big and small. This is how we create a better world, one act of integrity at a time.
Let your dollars do the talking: If you are able, support businesses and organizations that align with your beliefs. Consider where you spend your money and whether those businesses are contributing to the kind of world you want to live in. Supporting ethical and inclusive businesses can make a difference. Similarly, consider donating to organizations that are fighting for the rights and well-being of marginalized communities.
If you are living with anxiety and fear, know that there is hope and that hope takes action. Do not be passive. Let your values guide your actions and your connections support you through this. Remember, even in the face of overwhelming challenges, we are not powerless. By prioritizing self-care, focusing on our spheres of influence, engaging with our communities, living our values, and supporting those who fight for justice, we can create a better future. Let us rise to this moment with courage and compassion, and work together to build the world we envision.
